Entertainment tidbits

I am happy at this news, since NPH played great parts in the first films in the series. Like the news story says will be curious to see how they bring NPH back for the third film, after what happened to him in the second one.

Neil Patrick Harris Confirmed to Return for A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas | /Film.

Major League is one of my favorite sports movies along with Tin Cup and Caddyshack, so if they can get a good script and a lot of the actors back like they are talking about I would be excited to see another Major League.

[Major league writer David S. Ward] “We’re actually talking about doing one right now. I’ve written, what I see, as Major League 3. We’re putting that together as we speak – in fact, next week I’m off to talk to James Robinson at Morgan Creek about it.

“It’s 20 years later, and Wild Thing comes out of retirement to work with this 19-year-old player”, Ward says of the storyline. “We’ve actually got three new characters in the new film. And if the new film is popular, they could carry the franchise on”.

I am interested in seeing this great show return, since while I did not watch it every week when it was first on, when I did watch it, the show was very funny and while a bit weird the show has the kind of humor that I enjoyed.

Rubicon/Game of Thrones

I talked about the AMC series Rubicon in a post last week, and this last Sunday AMC did a sneak peak of hour one of the two hour pilot that will premiere August 1st.  For just seeing the first hour of it, I certainly think the show has promise, and has a certain level of intrigue that I believe I will quite enjoy about the show.  Like Roddenberry said in the quote in the post yesterday about having respect for the audience, I think Rubicon does have that and does not dumb itself down and just lets the viewers try to figures things out as well.  Like mentioned before, enjoy shows based on politics and conspiracy type stories and it looks like Rubicon will have plenty of that in it.  Here is a link to the first hour of the pilot if interested, which I would recommend watching.

Rubicon

The first teaser trailer is out for the HBO show Game of Thrones based on the book series of the same name.  Looks a bit intriguing the small glimpse we get, and interested to see more.

Roddenberry’s Star Trek

In 1973 Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry responded to a fan letter.  What I think Roddenberry talks about below is a real key in terms of success of any story.  That is to focus on the people in the story and the drama and conflict surrounding them and not the technology that might be able to catch people’s eye in the short term, but to make viewers stick around you have to have a good story which is where good characters come in.  If you click on over to the link their are a few other good parts from the letter.

STAR TREK had no ‘magic formula’ unless you consider respect for the audience and hard work a formula. It has been my opinion for years that science fiction, like any other story, should be mainly about people with hardware being secondary. It seems to me the networks and stations have wasted a lot of money seeking some mysterious formula in STAR TREK when really you make your science fiction the same way you make any other good story and there are no shortcuts.

via Letters of Note: Science fiction should be mainly about people.

The quote below echoes quite well what Roddenberry was talking about in the terms of focusing on the characters and the story before  the technology.  How the author makes the case about what a possible new Star Trek TV show should be about. That it should  focus on questions that make the viewer think and when Star Trek was at its best I think that is what it did.

“A new series would need to address timely, relevant questions. How does the Utopia-esque Federation of Planets incorporate its globes and colonies? How do you balance innate cultures with the Federation’s lofty ideals? “Star Trek is all about finding new cultures and, when possible, adding them to the Federation,” wondered my friend Teelin…..The crew and viewer are then forced to address a moral, possibly even serialized, dilemma decorated in top-notch Sci-Fi accoutrements. What could be better?”

I agree with Agent Vaughn AKA Michael Vartan, rather see original cast back.  Because it is way too soon to be rebooting a show that just ended a few years ago.

“I heard rumors of it, and to be honest with you, I find it absolutely preposterous,” Vartan said in a conference call on June 7, while he was promoting the medical drama Hawthorne. “I’m still young enough to run down a hallway, and so is Jennifer [Garner]. What is this nonsense of recasting Alias? Give us 20 years at least. How dare they?”

He’s being sarcastic there, and he says it with a laugh, but there is a kernel of truth to Vartan’s rant. Wouldn’t getting Vartan and Garner back for some butt-kicking adventures be better than starting over?

Even though a few days old, I still glad to hear that the BBC series Torchwood will get a fourth season.  Quite enjoyed the shorter season three more mini series style Children of Earth.

When the cult series “Torchwood” finally returns in the summer of 2011, the sci-fi drama will have a new American home and a more international flavor. “’Torchwood’ has to date been located primarily in Cardiff, Wales,” Starz’s Monday release said. “The new series will allow Davies and his writing team to tell a more explosive and global story, one that takes advantage of the unlimited narrative opportunities of a premium television service like Starz.”

When I finally saw the first film, I surprislingly enjoyed it, since was not quite sure what really to expect from it.

Nesson said that he’s meeting with Besson later this month to talk about the sequel. The big hurdle right now, according to the actor? It will be “hard to get a plot that will be believable.”

What could have been.

After watching it, I can see the foundation for the show that came to be but some parts of the pilot are not great.. guess that is why it did not make it in this incarnation..

Here’s your Big Bang Theory trivia of the day: Long before Kaley Cuoco joined the CBS sitcom as Leonard and Sheldon’s ditzy neighbor Penny, Chuck Lorre shot a pilot with unknown Canadian actress/VJ Amanda Walsh as his female lead.

The part I did not like is the character Gilda that takes the place of the nerdy friend to Sheldon and Leonard.  I also thought that Amanda Walsh who plays the character Katie, did a good job and enjoyed the character, but still think I like Penny more.

The video’s in the link above do not work, but found alternate copies of the pilot from Digg.com article I found this at.  Here they are behind the cut.

Rubicon: Promising Summer series

Looks to be another promising summer TV series from AMC.  Since work in politics always enjoy a good tv show based around that area.  I am also a sucker for conspiracies, always had a fascination with them.  TV show poster and cast information under cut.

“Rubicon revolves around a secret society that pulls the strings on the world political stage. The series focuses on an analyst at a national think tank who discovers that his employers are not who they seem to be.”
